Vending Machines Have Everything

On a recent trip that Chris and I took to a local mall (yes, I am a mall rat) I found this amazing vending machine.

It’s full of everything you could possibly want/need. Things you forgot at home, and things you didn’t know you wanted until you saw them.

Candy and snacks, diapers, sanitary products, halls, juice boxes,  hot wheels cars, teddy bears and even pacifiers among other things are all contained within this one vending machine.

Vending machines used to be reserved for drinks, snacks and things found in Women’s bathrooms that I won’t mention by name here. Now it seems that you can buy anything in a machine. I’ve seen machines that vend stamps, small bags, makeup… When we went to florida, there was even a vending machine there that I could have bought tons of iPod products from (iPod Nanos, iPod touches, iTunes gift cards and headphones).

We are truly living in the future. A time where a machine (dare I say… ROBOT) allows you to buy things you want and need without needing to interact with a human.

At the height of this revolution right now I would have to say is redbox.  Redbox, allows you to choose your DVD via touch screen (as many as you want) then once you’ve entered your credit card information (so that they can charge you if you don’t return the DVD) vends your movie using a very futuristic (well to me) slot. Rentals are $1 a day and if you keep it for 25 days it’s yours to keep (the max they will charge you is $25). Not bad.

But wait, it gets better… Become a member of this site http://www.insideredbox.com/redbox-codes/. And you’ll find many codes that will allow you to rent the movie for free. Well, it’ll give you $1 off so if you return the movie within 24 hours the movie is free. So when the library is closed and you can’t borrow the movie you want to see this is the perfect solution!

Chris and I have used this service a few times and only once did we have an issue with a DVD being too scratched to watch. We called up customer service and they refunded our money without us needing to PROVE that it was unwatchable. Not bad customer service for a company that for the most part interacts with it’s customers via machines.

I have realized recently that I am truly living in one of the most exciting times for technology. I am living in the era of the nerd and the geek. As a geek/nerd myself, I am very excited. I love that I can sit in my bed with my laptop and type out a blog, as I listen to music that is stored on my desktop in the other room and check my e-mail on my phone. I love that it’s possible to remote into my computer at home from my phone. I love that I don’t have to be plugged into a wall, or even connected to a wireless network in order to download applications to my phone (while we’re thinking about that I love that I can even have applications on my phone, 3D apps at that!).

To quote Judy Dench in the newest spaceship earth “We stand on the brink of a new renaissance”.

I can’t wait to see where else the digital world takes us. Anyone plan on making a machine that can dispense a computer?

Little Big Planet (and my Sackboy)

Over the last month or so I’ve been playing Little Big Planet (a extremely fun Playstation 3 game).

The game is incredible, you run around as a Sackboy (or girl) and collect points, stickers, costumes, vehicles and loads of other things for you to customize your world (and make your own levels). I’m not very good, I tend to take WAY WAY too long on the jumping puzzles. Let me put it this way, long enough for Chris to leave the room, make a snack, come back, and yep… still trying to get up to the third level… ::sigh:: I never claimed to be good at this kind of thing.

Never the less, really fun game, and with a very cute main character. You can change the fabric your Sackboy is made of and add clothing pieces (everything from capes to swim suits, top hats to wigs). The possibilities are endless. Even still, the Sackboy in his pure, un-altered form, is adorable. So adorable that I went on a hunt for a plush Sackboy. Unfortunately I couldn’t find anything. Just this guy…..

But… He’s not for sale…

Why???

He was made by one of the developers Mom’s (what a cool Mom! Check it out on their blog -Click Me-). While that’s great for them… What am I to do?

How do I live without my own cute little Sackboy?

Luckily, Chris suggested I search Etsy.com, the place to buy all things handmade. I found someone who crochets Sackboys and sells them. But not only are the finished dolls for sale… So is the pattern. Only problem is that it’s a crochet pattern, and I don’t crochet.

Or….

At least I didn’t until Thanksgiving weekend… Thanks to the pattern, the internet, and a book from Pattie (thanks!). I am now the proud owner of my very own hand crocheted Sackboy (well, Chris is, I gave it to him).

My-SackBoy

Not as good as some… But pretty good for my first crocheted thing ever… And I’d say… Pretty cute.

Maybe over Christmas break I will make one that looks like my Sackboy (if it works out I’ll post pictures of both my character, and what I make).

One last trailer from the game… I LOVE SACKBOYS!

So awhile ago I went to the comic convention, and as I mentioned there are lots of artists that have booths at the convention including the guys from Imaginism Studios.

Imaginism Studios is a Design/Illustration Company that do amazing art/illustrations. So cool, that I just have to share it. Below you’ll find some of my favorite pieces (if you’re interested in seeing more check out their STORE or their PORTFOLIO or click on the picture you like, it will take you to the part of the store where it can be bought).

This next one happens to be my favorite… Unfortunately it’s SOLD OUT… :(

On top of making exceptionaly cool art, they also have a BLOG and they TEACH CLASSES both IRL and online (online classes are called SCHOOLISM how fun is that? Schoolism doesn’t seem to work with firefox, but works with internet explorer just fine). I am seriously considering taking the digital painting class… Though probably not the one that starts in October because I have a lot on my plate right now.

I would love to learn how to create peices like these, the guys over there are incredibly talented… One can only wish.

::sigh::

Spore (the Creature Creator)

So this is about the Spore Creature Creator which I’ve had for a couple of months now. I’ve been meaning to write this for quite some time now, but life (and less demanding posts) have gotten in the way. But now… Spore has my undivided attention.

One of the reasons this post has taken so long is because I wanted to make sure that I did it justice. Spore Creature Creator is the creative building portion of the much larger game Spore (a game by Will Wright the creator of “The Sims” where you take a creature through various stages of evolution, helping it evolve things it needs, which comes out this fall). The basic concept for the Creature Creator is that you build a creature that you can then TEST DRIVE to see how it will look and act during game play. Both the building and test drive are excecuted very well in this teaser/half game.

Building a Creature is very intuitive. You drag an arrow out from the spine to add more vertebrae, and drag it back towards the center of the spine to decrease that number. Vertebrae can be added both at “tail” and the “head”. From there you control how skinny/fat your creature is (and this is controlled by scrolling up or down over individual vertebrae, although what you do to one does affect the others directly beside it to a lesser degree). You can choose to add arms and legs, or not, and from here (well more like from the beginning, but this sounds better so.. just keep in mind that it’s really from opening the program, anyways… again) from here, the possibilities are endless. There are tons of mouths (some of which make great heads all on their own) eyes, noses, hands, feet, as well as decorations which include feathers, grass, pom poms, spikes, hair, antenna…. the list goes on and on and provides many opportunities to create some pretty amazing things.

Zebro and Babies

Scales and Son

All of the pieces can be placed anywhere on the Creature, you can put the Head on the Tail if you wish (that is if you’re crazy!). Which is another key thing, while building your creature, it stays positioned on the platform facing the same way. You can rotate your view, but the head will always be facing towards the arrow on the platform which comes in handy because along with adding vertebrae, you also can shape how the spine sits (within reason) and it’s possible to build creatures that curl over themselves. Without that handy arrow, it would be quite difficult to remember if your pulled the head or tail around.

Perhaps the best thing about the creature creator is the lack of road blocks you will come across. Every part that you add to the creature is customizable. Everything from making it smaller and taller, to messing around and twisting it. The same antenna part seems to have endless possibilities. On my creatures above for instance. Zebro: the same part makes up both the “Mane” and “Tail” (I liked the feathers), his mouth was placed under a head I created so that only the bottom jaw is visible (I built this guy before the full version was out and so the horse head part was not yet available, I thought about updating him…but…I love him too much). Scales: the same part makes up both his mustache, the spikes on the ends of his wings as well as his horns, and, believe it or not, he uses the same mouth as Zebro. Though in the case of Scales, I used it as a head and made it skinnier and longer (talk about multi-functional!).

Once you’ve built your creature you to choose it’s colors and all of your “parts” will colorize depending on the color scheme you choose (only a few parts go unaffected such as the grass and leaf parts which are supposed to be for camouflage). This, like the rest of the building process is very free, and while you don’t get a paint brush to just go to town, most things you could want are right there including stripes, polka dots, spots, fades…..

Once you’ve got your creature how you like it, it’s time for a test drive (but don’t freak out! if something turns out not to move the way you like, you can always go back and change it, even after you save, that’s the beauty of evolution). The actions your creatures can perform are various and include walking, punching, jumping, dancing (several dances including THE POINT and my favorite HIPPITY HOP) they even have poses like tah dah!

Poonchki (cute name for my first Spore Creature)
Walking, HIPPITY HOP, then the move called CUTIE

Alright, that’s cool you say, but what about when I put this guy in a game and it’s happy or scared? I want to see how it will behave. Well, Will Wright thought of that too. During the test drive, your creatures can also display emotions such as happiness, fear and sadness (which is very sad indeed). Observe…

Vinny
Anger, followed by the SUMO move, followed by Sadness.

In the creator, to see these actions you can click on the button that corresponds with that move, or you can just observe your creature and see what it does. This is especially cool if you hatch some baby creatures because your creature will bend down to say Hi to it’s babies and they mimic it.

After having the creator this long I still love it. I’ve spent several hours just playing around on it, and I plan to spend several more. The game has certainly made me more excited about the upcoming release of Spore and I can’t wait to play… I want to thank the game developers for making it easy to take pictures and video as well as share them (it made this post a lot easier then it could have been). I know that the Creature Creator (and the video feature) is meant to drum up hype, as well as make a few extra dollars on a function that will be in the full game anyway. But, I’m happy to support a game, and a company, that turn out excellent games. Especially this one, that inspires so much creativity…

Creatures created by various people on YouTube.

Well done Maxis… Well done.

I made my Laptop cuter!

I’ve always been into customizing my life. As a teenager I would alter my clothing, adding patches, beads, or drawing with wash out markers. I made pillows and decorations for my bedroom. Even now, my apartment has touches of my own, not just store bought things used as pictured.

I recently customized my desktop and made it as cute as my Little Pink Laptop is.

I had the help of a really cute site Pixelgirl. If you’re looking for icons, or new desktop backgrounds I highly recommend this site.
